About Me!

My name is Tristen Davis, and I am a rising junior in the Honors College at the University of South Carolina. My major is civil engineering, and I hope to work as a civil designer for the Department of Defense. I am originally from Spartanburg, SC, and I enjoy being active, hanging out with my friends, and building Legos.          I decided to take part in this service course because we get to immerse ourselves in the African community through service. This will also be my first time travelling internationally, and I am excited to experience a different culture. While I have always wanted to study abroad, I wanted the trip to be meaningful to who I am as a person and this course will allow me to experience African culture and learn more about myself as an African American. Being able to immerse myself in the rawest form of African culture while serving their community is a dream come true, so I decided to jump at the opportunity.

About my Portfolio

To me, this portfolio serves as a time capsule to commemorate my time in Malawi in the form of photos and memories. It captures my key takeaways from volunteering in the villages, spending time at the Crisis Nursery, participating in the mobile medical clinic, and everything else that I experienced while in Malawi. Through this portfolio, I learned that reflecting on your experiences allows you to learn and grow from them. Journaling forced me to live in the moment and think about everything we were doing beyond just experiencing it and moving on. While this portfolio shares the key moments, it could never express everything that I learned during my time in Malawi. There are a lot of moments that I couldn’t fit in this portfolio but I hope you enjoy everything I have to share!
